Local Area Information

Slate Quarry Farm Cottage is situated in the heart of Ruby Country; an area enclosed by Exmoor, Dartmoor, Bodmin Moors and the coast. Ruby Country is a quiet, unspoilt and undiscovered area, rich in opportunities for visitors. The pretty village of Northlew is just a mile down the road, there is a pub and a shop. Okehampton with its castle ruins, Holsworthy & Launceston are all easily reached and offer a variety of shops, banks etc. RHS Rosemoor is only a 40 minute drive. Close proximity to the A30 means exploring Cornwall, as well as Devon, is easy.

Tavistock is the largest town in West Devon, with very attractive architecture of local stone and a wide range of interesting and practical shops. There is also the Pannier Market (Tuesday - Saturday) which has been in existence for over 900 years and was granted its royal charter in 1105. Hatherleigh is also worth a visit; a pretty small market town, with several nice pubs. Weekly sales of cattle, sheep & poultry still take place (Tuesdays). The county city of Exeter is only 45 minutes away with it's beautiful Cathedral, and great selection of restaurants and shops.

We are just 9 miles from one of the UK's finest National Parks, Dartmoor. Okehampton is something of a "hotspot" for walking, being a central point on almost all the mapped trails including the Dartmoor Way, the Tarka Trail, the Two Moors Way.There are approximatley 450 miles of paths and tracks on the moor; a fantastic place to walk, cycle, climb, ride, and even canoe. A new way to enjoy Dartmoor is Geocoaching, the hunt for carefully hidden caches using maps and satellite navigation devices. For fishermen there is plenty of course fishing available near the cottage, Golf and riding can also be found close by.

Just down the road is Roadford Lake (reservoir), here you will find 730 acres of water! You can enjoy a range of activites both on and off the water including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, high ropes, climbing and archery. And when you have done all that there is a splendid café with outstanding views over the water. The Cookworthy Forest is very close, owned by the Forestry Commission there are many miles of well kept tracks through this woodland alive with wildlife, particularly Buzzards, Kestrels and Sparrowhawks.
